TFS#1: The Real Purpose of Defense
You don't want to be given success, you want the opportunity for success.
Like most people, I favor one side of my body when drilling.
But every once in a while I drill on my weak side.
When I do, I noticed things I've never noticed before.
You don't need a drastic change to see a different possibilities.
Now, let's start rolling...
Techniques For The Week
Make it a habit to minimize forward shrimping or putting your feet on the floor when retaining your guard, it should be a last ditch effort as explained in this 5-minute video.
By turning your back to recover your guard, it makes it harder for your opponent to predict your next counter when they are attempting to pass your guard.
When drilling, make sure you understand what each movement of your body is doing instead of going through the motions, this will help you translate the knowledge into muscle memory.
Word On The Tweet
Beginning of a round, you know nothing about your opponent.
Do you pull guard or go for take down? Why?

My Final Thoughts
If you ask yourself why we work on our defense and guard retention in Jiu-Jitsu, there are a few reasons that come to mind.
The first is probably pretty simple, so our opponent doesn't pass our guard and we don't end up in an unfavorable position.
The second is a little more complicated, that is we play defense to buy ourselves time to see the right window to attack.
So we play defense to give our offense a chance.
If you're not looking to attack on defense, you're a sitting duck waiting to get passed...
