TFS#138: Problem, Solution, Action

New year goals don't work and not because the intentions aren't there, but because they're presenting in the wrong way.

I’m not going to flood you with Jiu Jitsu techniques this week since we’re still celebrating the holidays.

Instead, it’s the perfect time to reflect on your growth and celebrate your hard work!

So let’s jump into it…

Here’s why new year resolutions don’t work.

Actually, there are a lot of reasons why.

But the most common one is that people don’t set realistic goals.

What they set as their “goal” is simply a desire.

And if you’ve already told yourself “this year, I’m going to win 3 gold medals!”…

Well, I hate to disappoint you, but that’s a horrible goal.

And unrealistic.

That’s because you don’t have control of a lot of factors.

You’ve tied your success and failure to outcomes.

Instead, you should associate your success and failure with how much effort you’ve put into your actions.

I want to focus more on showing you how to approach your training.

This newsletter initially started by sharing resources to help connect people to more resources.

With these past two years, I’ve been watching how our gym has grown by tweaking the class structure.

So now I’m focused on how I can help the average hobbyist improve his grappling by being more efficient with his or her time. (And our competitors have benefited from this too!)

How they can get more out of their time on the mats.

How they can learn more about injuries and their body.

I did this by studying how people train outside of the US.

I traveled around the world and dropped into gyms. I’ve also watched endless videos of how Russian wrestlers train and how Japanese judokas run their classes.

I’ve been obsessed with how to learn, not just learning.

So, this newsletter will focus more on how you can approach training and how you can use your sparring rounds more effectively to suit your current needs.

Showing up to class is the bare minimum, now I want you to be able to have more control of your growth.

With that, the free Passing Instructional is coming. The team is currently working on writing the content and making sure the material is as digestible as possible.

We’re not trying to pump out instructionals for the sake of building a giant library, that’s what a bunch of other platforms have done…and they’re not super useful.

Instead, we not only want to give you good Jiu Jitsu material, but show you how you can implement the material into your warm up, drilling, and sparring round.

We want to show you how you can bridge the gap between a video and your actual Jiu Jitsu.

Here’s what you can do right now.

Hope you were able to eat your favorite deserts while also avoiding any awkward family interactions.

Enjoy the time you have off and spend the next couple of days thinking about the goals you want to set.

But as of now, here’s what you can do:

  1. Write in and share your goal with me. You can keep yourself accountable by letting me know. You have a digital friend in me to hold zero judgement about your Jiu Jitsu goals. If you’d like, I can even check-in a month from now to see how you’re doing.

  2. Share this newsletter with a friend. Simply forward them this email and they can sign up at the bottom of this email. Helping me grow this newsletter means I get better feedback and helps me prepare better material.

I’ll see you in 2025!

Wayne

There’s more to come next year…
