TFS#145: Better Submission Position & The Real Goal Of Training

Don't expect to get the submission if you don't have the position. But here's how...

So my work with the emergency fire relief efforts aren’t ending after all.

I’m currently working on hydrologic engineering analysis for bridge design for all the burnt areas in Los Angeles.

But that’s okay, I still have time to share these finer details of Jiu Jitsu.

Let’s get started…

To understand the control, you need to understand the defense.

If you’re a white or blue belt, your main goal is to control—not necessarily to submit.

Learn to control first and the submissions will come.

Last week I talked about Mount, and because of the high volume of interests, I’m going to give you finer details today.

Be sure to test these details out when you go into training this week.

Here’s what you need to understand—person in bottom has 3 basic movements that will help them escape: bridging, pushing off the hips, and balling up.

So naturally, when you’re on top, you want to take that away from them. Elongate their body and get rid of their hips.

Because once you can control your opponent in this manner, it’s extremely demoralizing.

Think about it this way, how many times have you given up because you felt demoralized in the moment?

Demoralizing your partner is about 80% of the submissions.

So your entire Jiu Jitsu game should be about developing a demoralizing experience for your partner.

FYI: When you’re passing guard, aim to pass to Mount, not Side Control. If you have questions about this, feel free to write in.

If you liked the rash guards in the video, they’re available.

Be sure to let them know Wayne sent you.

Longevity is the real name of the game.

John Stockon was an NBA point guard for the Utah Jazz for 19 seasons—missing only 22 games in that stretch.

For those who don’t know, the NBA season is 82 games long.

He currently leads the all time NBA assist leaders with over 3000+ assist over the second place Chris Paul.

John Stockton wasn’t a flashy player, he wasn’t big or athletic…but he was a player with sound fundamentals and remained reliable because of his durability.

If you are looking to train Jiu Jitsu simply to improve your skills, your focus should be to improve your control.

Because not only does it make you become better at managing your gas tank, you’re training responsibly.

You’ll greatly reduce the risk of injury for yourself as well as your partners.

The longer you can stay healthy, the more Jiu Jitsu you’ll experience in your life.

Have a great week,

Wayne
