TFS#73: Controlled Side Control Submission

One of the best ways to start a chain.

Passing guard to Side Control isn’t easy.

Now you’ve got to stabilize and then look for an attack or be ready for a transition.

And as a smaller person, I like to move in a way that is unorthodox for my opponent.

As you make your journey towards purple belt, it’s actually worth while to explore unconventional movements and positions as it gives you the opportunity to discover your own unique style.

One of these less popular moves to go for is getting the Omoplata from Side Control.

1. Shift Your Hips

After you’ve establish Side Control, make sure to shift your hips up towards their shoulders, pushing up into their armpit.

The purpose of this is to eliminate their elbows and arms from framing and pushing you away.

You’ll want to continuing to push up until you get your hips right on top of their arm.

2. Trap The Arm

Back step to get their arm in between your legs and pull their arm up.

Then lock their arm by sliding your inside leg right under their arm.

Here is an available wristlock!

Now you want to grab their wrist and push their hand towards their own body.

Bring your far side elbow to the same side. This helps keep the arm trapped while you take your other hand off of the wrist.

3. Walking Back Step

So you’re now controlling the arm, which is the most important part of the setup.

Start walking backwards in a circular motion until you find yourself in the more familiar Omoplata position.

This motion flattens them out and gets you to the attacking spot.

Closing Remarks

There’s a cool back take from this Omoplata position too, but I’ll share that another time.

A lot of people won’t think to attack Omoplata from the Side Control so you’ll definitely find success in your gym.

Be mindful when drilling this, it’s a lot of pressure on your partner’s shoulder joint so go slow.
