TFS#75: Short And Sweet

Explore different methods to enter into your favorite finish.

I like to share these short and easy-to-understand techniques since you’ll get immediate results and hopefully those results will keep you motivated to continue training Jiu-Jitsu.

So when something doesn’t work, make sure you’re not making excuses.

Always go into training with purpose.

Now let's get into today's idea...

The Choi Bar

You may have heard of the Choi Bar before and think it’s some fancy submission.

But really it’s just a setup for an armbar…a setup most people don’t see coming.

The Choi Bar is a sneaky move that can be setup from many guards including the closed guard and half guard.

It’s most effective when someone is trying to establish a crossface on you since you’ll be attacking that arm.

Imagine an arm coming at you for the crossface.

You’ll underhook their arm (getting them to turn their elbow) and use your other arm to frame against their neck.

This frame is important since it’ll keep your opponent at a distance to allow you to throw your leg over their back and enter into the Armbar.

It’s like a Inverted Armbar, except you’re entering from the opposite side.

Closing Words

The Choi Bar is a move that can be used from various positions and can easily swing the momentum of the match in your favor.

It’s great when going up against opponents that like to pressure in and get a crossface.

It also doesn’t require a lot of flexibility, speed, or strength so it's pretty adaptable to many styles.

And if you decide not to go for the Armbar, the Choi Bar can be used to help you transition into something else.
