TFS#82: Lasso For Control & Hip Mobility

Minor adjustments in your hips will help the control with the easy and versatile Lasso Guard.

Lasso Guard Control

The Lasso Guard is a nice guard to play if you find yourself having trouble setting up your favorite guard.

It’s a nice pit stop (but you don’t want to hang out there too long!) to control the opponent while you look for your next move.

The other thing about this guard is that it’s really easy to get to.

Once you grab a sleeve, it’s pretty much there.

Common transitions from this guard include:

  • De La Riva, Spider Lasso, Sit-Up, Collar Sleeve

  • Multiple Sweeps in all directions

  • Triangles, Omoplata, Back takes

From that short list I’m sure you have some of your favorite attacks from there.

And if you’d like more details on how to connect from Lasso to your favorite guard or attack, you can write in by replying to this email.

Easy Way To Mitigate Lower Body Pain

Warm ups are extremely important, especially the hips.

In BJJ, hips are everything.

And let’s be honest, most people have weak hips.

If you sit a lot throughout the day, you’ll want to make sure you activate your hips before starting class.

Having tight hips will increase the chances to lower back, hamstring, and of course hip injuries just to name a few.

Don’t forget, warming up actually helps your mind focus and mentally prepare for class.

There’s a lot of jokes floating around with purple belts skipping warm ups and that’s because a lot of warm up are boring!

So it’s on you to prepare your body and keep it ready for action.

Closing Thought

The Lasso is a great way to slow down your opponent, especially if you’re a smaller guard player.

It slows the opponent down enough where it’ll allow you to adjust your spacing and direction.

Remember, whatever direction, transition, or submission you’re trying to go for off the Lasso, your hip direction will dictate how well you can make your transition.

Until next time! I’ll see you on the mats,
